Not to sound like a broken record, but the Philadelphia 76ers had a hell of an offseason. The franchise, armed with a ton of cap space heading into the summer, made full use of all the financial ammunition at its disposal and then some. As it stands, no other team will earn a higher grade in that regard.
However, bet on the 76ers with their current deck at your own risk. With the team having the makeup of a true title contender, Daryl Morey and the entire Philadelphia management will not settle for less and jump at the opportunity. all opportunities to improve the workforcebut this could come at the expense of these five players who might not finish the season with the team.
The 76ers management may have had an A+ offseason, but there’s still one lingering reason for their summer escapades. Signing KJ Martin to a rather questionable two-year, $16 million deal was just a prelude to what should be a frantic quest for midseason upgrades.
Philadelphia is reportedly looking for another high-caliber rotation player since re-signing Martin. intends to return it and his contract to enter the market for players with salaries between $8 million and $12 million. They could simply stick with the young forward for the rest of the season, but having picks attached to him should set them up for a trade.
No offense to Martin, who still touts himself as a promising Derrick Jones Jr. prototype, but unless he sees a major overhaul of his game and the forced inclusion of some semblance of perimeter play, he’s going to be a tough fit for the 76ers. So once his trade restriction is lifted, his days in Philly will be numbered.
