While the New York Knicks appear to be healthy and have proven to be one of the best teams in the NBA. When they are, there is always a need for more. Knicks fans are always looking to improve and that won’t change because of the success the team has had. The main target of the fans was Donovan Mitchellbut the latest update on him is not promising.
Sam Amico of Hoops Wire thinks Mitchell will sign an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“I predict Mitchell signs a max extension with the Cavs. But how things play out from here might have something to do with it. I was told several times that he was happy in Cleveland.
Mitchell played the best basketball of his career for the Cavaliers. His 28.3 points per game last season were the most of his career and his 6.2 assists this season are the most of his career. The team also found success, sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 41-24 record.
Mitchell’s former teammate talks about joining the Knicks
Although Mitchell never stated that he wanted to play for the New York Knicks since he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the national media only suggested that he wanted to be in New York.
After the Knicks game against the Magic of Orlando March 8, Joe Ingles spoke about Mitchell coming to the Knicks, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
“I think when we were talking about him coming to New York, the team wasn’t doing very well. I think the way the team is right now, I think he’s pretty happy with the way things are going in Cleveland,” said Ingles, an Australian. “But it still wouldn’t surprise me. …He’s a New York kid. If I could play in Melbourne and win the same amount of money, why wouldn’t you consider it?
Ingles went on to say that even when they were together with the Utah Jazzthey all heard the rumors about Mitchell to the Knicks.
What Mitchell would bring to the Knicks
Coupling Jalen Brunson and Mitchell defensively can be concerning given their size. However, the head coach Tom Thibodeau usually finds a way for his defense to succeed. Brunson and Mitchell should get used to playing together, but that shouldn’t be a problem considering they can play off the ball.
Julius Randle plays a lot with the ball in his hands and also Garland of Darius. It wouldn’t be perfect at first, but they’re too talented not to realize that at some point.
The Knicks would get one of the best scorers in basketball, someone who can score all over the court. Mitchell is one of the best three-point shooters in the league, making nearly 37 and. 38% on over nine attempts per game in his two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
New York is expected to trade for Mitchell this offseason and in January, Fred Katz of The Athletic reported that the Knicks’ long-term plan to add a star would likely happen this summer. Perhaps he was referring to Mitchell.
