PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to sign big man Kai Jones to a 10-day contract to add to their depth at center and power forward. The Sixers are in need of some size since Joel Embiid is out with a meniscus injury.

In 67 career games with the Charlotte Hornets, Jones is averaging 2.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game and provides versatility and athleticism for the Sixers. Charlotte released the big man in October after two seasons.

Kelly Oubre Jr., who played with Jones the previous two seasons in Charlotte, knows exactly what he can bring. Oubre says he was a good voice of reason for his younger teammate.

“New energy, athleticism, versatility, but it’s up to us to welcome him with open arms to let him know that you know, we are your family,” Oubre said. “You are loved and I am happy to have my boy back. I was definitely a good voice of reason for him there in Charlotte. So I think everything happens for a reason.

Jones was the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and showed plenty of athleticism and defensive acumen. He had 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals in Friday’s G League win for the Delaware Blue Coats. He will have to prove himself in a short period of time to land another contract.
