A recent and beloved Chicago Bull is coming home. And not a moment too soon! Unfortunately, it’s not quite Michael JordanScottie Pippen, Joakim Noah or Jimmy Butler.
This is Javonte Green, a versatile reserve winger who head coach Billy Donovan has often insisted on playing out of his power forward position, despite being 6’4″. Green has quickly become l a fan favorite, thanks to much of his fantastic dunks, which fit right in alongside Slam Dunk champions Zach LaVine and Derrick Jones Jr. Green was something of a raw athlete without a great handle (he could (shooting three-pointers from the corners when left wide open, but never at high volume). Nevertheless, fans appreciated his dynamism and motor. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that he will sign a 10-day contract with the team.
He didn’t play on a NBA roster since 2022-23, when he was last with the Bulls. He spent this season playing for the Golden State Warriors’ NBAGL affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. Green is averaging 11.6 points with .489/.355/.824 shooting times in 11 regular season games with Santa Cruz. He also averages 6.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.6 blocks and 0.6 dimes per night.

The 30-year veteran from Radford first arrived in Chicago from the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team trade in 2021 that also included the Washington Wizards. Green and Boston forward/center Daniel Theis were sent to Chicago, while former Bulls center Daniel Gafford landed in Washington alongside fellow Chicago wing Chandler Hutchison. The Bulls shipped floor-spacing center Luke Kornet to Boston, while the Wiz brought in their own version, Moritz Wagner.

Although he played sparingly as a deep bench option after being acquired in trade, Green quickly transformed into an exciting energy reserve during his two full seasons with the Bulls, 2021- 23. During that span, he averaged 6.5 points on a .547/.360/.780 slash line, 3.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.5 blocks, in 20.6 minutes. Injuries ultimately marred his run with Chicago, as they did for many Bulls over those two seasons. Playing as a small four-ball against much larger and much heavier foes certainly couldn’t have helped.
He underwent two arthroscopic procedures on his right knee, in 2020 with Boston and the following year with Chicago. Green’s athleticism remains intriguing, and while he won’t raise the ceiling much for the heavily injured Bulls, it will still be a treat for fans of the club’s last playoff appearance (in 2022) to witness to these reunions, for as long as they last. . Welcome back, Javonte!
