The New Orleans Pelicans pulled off a huge upset in Miami without their star player, Brandon Ingram. Zion Williamson and Co. blew out the Miami Heat 111-88, humiliating them on their home court. Jimmy Butler struggled throughout the game and finished with just 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting. It seemed like the Pelicans were waiting to get their hands on Jimmy Butler and Co. after what happened the last time these teams faced each other.

After embarrassing the Heat in Miami, the Pelicans star Naji Marshall rubbed salt in their wounds by removing Jimmy Butler’s viral postgame interview from last month’s game. In the interview, Butler made some bold statements after beating the Pelicans on the road: “We will beat them next time too. We’re just a better team. However, the Pelicans made Butler eat his words tonight, and Naji Marshall took to social media to assert his dominance. “My volume is not working, what does it say????” Marshall wrote while sharing Butler’s viral quote.

The Heat and Pelicans last met on February 23 in New Orleans. And this game went viral for all the wrong reasons. The game heated up in the fourth quarter as the two teams clashed physically after Kevin Love intentionally fouled Zion Williamson. The incident quickly escalated, leading to a scuffle between Butler and Naji. Thomas Bryant and Jose Alvarado also fought near the announcer’s table.

The altercations led to several expulsions and five players from both teams, including Jimmy Butler and Naji Marshall, were suspended for their actions.

The Pelicans are no longer what Jimmy Butler thought

When Jimmy Butler claimed Miami would beat the Pelicans tonight, he had the previous record to back up his claim. Before tonight’s humiliating defeat, the Miami Heat had won 7 consecutive games against New Orleans. The Pelicans last beat Jimmy Butler and Co. on March 6, 2020, so it was a safe bet for Butler to secure a win tonight. However, the Pelicans are not the same team as before. They have improved significantly this season and are currently the 5th seed in a stacked Western Conference.

Meanwhile, the Heat are 8th in an easier Eastern Conference. The Pelicans have several stars who have been in great shape all season, including Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum and Naji Marshall. Even though the Pelicans had to play tonight without their star, Brandon Ingram, they dominated the Heat on both ends of the court. The Pelicans team this season might be the best they’ve had in years. And they can certainly make some noise in the playoffs, as they did tonight in Jimmy Butler’s house.
