The New York Knicks painted a clear picture for their interior group to open the weekend.

By Michael Scotto of Hoops HypeThe Knicks fully guaranteed Jericho Sims’ $2.09 million salary through the 2024-25 season. Sims would have been expected to be released if his salary wasn’t guaranteed, but neither appears destined for a fourth tour in Manhattan.

Sims, one of the few players still drafted on the Knicks roster, has often struggled to carve out a lasting spot in the Knicks’ rotation despite his longevity. The 58th overall pick in the 2021 draft, a Texas native, averaged a career-low 13 minutes per game last season, along with 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 points in 45 appearances (11 starts).

This time around, however, Sims could be able to fill a crucial need for the Knicks, who remain short on interior depth after Isaiah Hartenstein left for Oklahoma City. Another player signed, Mitchell Robinson, is expected to extend his longest-term streak with the Knicks, but he is coming off ankle issues that plagued his 2023-24 season.

Sims is expected to compete with Precious Achiuwa, who was recently brought back on a one-year deal, for the backup role. Many see Achiuwa as Robinson’s necessary backup, but the former Raptor seems to view himself more as a power forward than a true five. Behind them is Ariel Hukporti, a German-born prospect who was selected with the 58th and final pick in the 2024 draft. Hukporti is signed to a two-way contract and is likely destined to contribute more to Westchester’s G League club than he did in Manhattan.

The battle for the backup center position will certainly be one of the most intriguing battles of the Knicks’ upcoming preseason activities, which once again begin in Charleston. Their first exhibition game is scheduled for Oct. 6 in Charlotte.
