Stephon Castle found himself in a rather fortunate situation with the San Antonio Spurs.

Castle joined a team with plenty of young talent while decorated veteran Chris Paul was making his way from Golden State. The timing of his arrival couldn’t be better for his chances of progression. With Paul set to play point guard as San Antonio looks to make the playoffs this season, Castle’s role will be quite versatile, working off the ball and also focusing on making plays with the ball in his hands in different formations.

Coming out of UConn with a championship under his belt, Castle’s drive and demeanor fit perfectly into this Spurs unit, and of course, with Gregg Popovich at the helm. He fits the mold and the scheme, and alongside Victor Wembanyama, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the West for years to come. Pairing those two with the impending development of Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell, San Antonio’s future is clearly bright.

Castle’s first season in the NBA will of course be about building his mental toughness, being a sponge, and learning everything he can from Paul, but his on-court production will be one of the best in this new rookie class. His ability to work on and off the ball, his defensive skills, and his tangible assets will allow him to maintain consistent production.

Regardless, joining a team at this stage, with the guidance he’ll receive from Paul, Popovich and others, coupled with a high level of young talent, Castle’s rookie campaign is set up very well – and it’ll likely be a very successful season for the former NCAA champion.
