While the Boston Celtics were busy celebrating their record 18 Owner Wyc Grousbeck left the city stunned when he announced that he would be selling the team in the coming months. Naturally, fans began to wonder who would take over the franchise and even LeBron James’ name came up in the conversation. However, one person is currently at the top of the list and is even feared by Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos! But his history of setbacks as an NBA owner might give LBJ a sigh of relief.

It was only two years ago, when the Phoenix Suns were up for sale, that Bezos began to show interest in becoming the new owner of the franchise. Knowing that the second richest man in the world was looking to be the richest man in the world, Shaq publicly admitted that he was not running in the race despite his desire to own an NBA team. “I want to be the only one who has a team of my own and competes against him. I’ll tell you something: I’m afraid of Big Man JB. Shaq O’Neal is afraid of Big Man JB.” However, Bezos lost the battle to Mat Ishbia, who eventually purchased the Suns for a record $4 billion.

But now Bezos could be entering the market again, as he recently sold $5 billion worth of Amazon stock, which many thought was in order to raise the money to buy the Celtics. However, he could face competition from LeBron James, as Fenway Sports Group is another potential bidder and the Lakers superstar owns a 1% stake in the company. While Bezos’ net worth is intimidating, his previous failure to buy the Suns could give LeBron confidence that he might just make it happen. And even if he doesn’t, he still has that Vegas dream intact.
