“Everybody’s trying to come after us, and I’m like, ‘Come on.’”

Jaylen Brown celebrates during a duck boat parade to celebrate the 18th Boston Celtics NBA championship on Friday, June 21, 2024. The Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics finally reached the summit and captured the team’s sought-after 18th championship in June.

But don’t expect Brown and the rest of Boston’s roster to rest on their laurels entering the 2024-25 season.

Despite only losing three playoff games as part of a dominant title run, Brown and the 2024-25 Celtics plan on operating with a short memory as part of their anticipated championship defense.

“Last year is over, to be honest,” Brown told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole. “We celebrated, we had a good time, it’s been an awesome summer — I’ve been having a great summer, by the way — but it’s over with, and now it’s back to work.”

Brown has had an eventful summer, even after taking home NBA Finals MVP honors following Boston’s win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Since earning his spot as an NBA champion, the 27-year-old swingman was snubbed by Team USA during the 2024 Summer Olympics — with the former All-NBA Second-Team talent also not earning a spot on the roster after Kawhi Leonard was ruled out due to injury.

Brown was on the outside looking in as Celtics teammates Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White (who earned Team USA’s final roster spot after Leonard’s injury) won gold in Paris.

But Brown has already started to ramp things up ahead of the start in training camp in October, posting photos of himself lifting weights underwater as part of his training regimen.

“Lord… [Brown] is underwater with a dumbbell in one hand and a basketball in the other…. [expletive] might be over for everybody,” Celtics great Kevin Garnett posted on X Sunday afternoon.

While no NBA team has repeated as NBA champions since the Golden State Warriors (2017-2018), the odds are in Boston’s favor in 2024-25, especially with the team bringing back nearly the same roster as last season.

Add in the additional motivation forged this summer as far as Brown’s Team USA omission and Tatum’s limited reps during the Olympics, and the Celtics seem to be up for the challenge that awaits this upcoming season.

“Now we’ve got the target on our back,” Brown told Poole. “Everybody’s trying to come after us, and I’m like, ‘Come on.’ So, it’s back to work and I’m looking forward to next season.”
