The Golden State Warriors weren’t supposed to be selected Stephen CurryYes, you heard that right. In the 2009 draft, the Warriors selected the iconic point guard with the seventh pick. The team that had two consecutive picks before them was the Minnesota Timberwolves. Ironically, they used those picks to draft two point guards, Ricky Rubio and Syracuse’s Johnny Flynn. So why pass up the best scoring option available? It wasn’t because they were oblivious to Curry’s mind-blowing skills. Steph Curry and his father, Dell, elaborated on this point on the Heat Check podcast.
Dell Curry had to explain why the Wolves didn’t mention his son’s name. It’s because the former Charlotte Hornets guard himself told Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach JB Bickerstaff not to recruit Steph. “I forgot to mention this. I got a call from Minnesota asking me to recruit you and I told them not to do it. Please don’t do it. No, it was JB Bickerstaff… They said okay, we won’t do it. And they didn’t.” he said on the podcast.

The Wolves originally brought up a wild story about Stephen Curry passing away. During a 2018 appearance on the Bill Simmons podcast, Curry revealed that his love of golf was a possible reason why general manager David Kahn chose not to draft him.
Did the Timberwolves Make the Biggest Mistake in NBA History by Leaving Out Steph Curry? React!
“I don’t know if this has been revealed yet, but there’s a story. Everyone knows how much I love golf and I play it in my spare time. I think the rumor was that he didn’t draft me because Minnesota is cold and I wouldn’t be able to play as much golf, so I would have been miserable. I hope that’s true because it’s hilarious.” said Stephen Curry.
Turns out, that’s not entirely true. But maybe the organization can finally get what it wants. After Anthony Edwards seemed to love playing with Curry during the Olympics, the franchise might be tempted to spend its money once Curry’s current contract expires. However, it’s already been advised against doing so.

Back in March, the Golden State Warriors were in serious trouble. That’s when rumors of Stephen Curry leaving after his current contract expired began to heat up. The Timberwolves seemed to be a popular option, sending Towns in exchange for the Baby Face Assassin. But Chris Broussard didn’t want that to happen..
But if that was the case, the analyst had a strange simulation.
“If he’s just a role player, averaging 14 points per game, and Edwards and KAT are carrying him, and he’s just doing his little job, that’s different. To me, it’s not worth it. But if he were to go to Minnesota, give him 25 [points] one night, and Anthony Edwards gives him 24, 26, then it’s a whole different story,” Broussard said.

According to what Stephen Curry has revealed, he doesn’t want to leave the Warriors. However, he hasn’t completely ruled out a trade. The only way he sees himself wearing another jersey is “if it’s a situation where he’s at the bottom of the standings.” That’s a scenario the 36-year-old doesn’t see happening anytime soon at Bay.
So the dream of having one of basketball’s most established icons in Minnesota may well remain a dream.
