So much for all the talk about Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the next owner of the Boston Celtics.
Bill Simmons, longtime basketball columnist The Ringtone fanned the flames of a potential Bezos purchase earlier this week on his podcast, saying there was a “legitimate buzz” around the deep-pocketed tech mogul who pays a premium for the Celtics.
But a new report has put a damper on any rumors that Bezos would be the one to open his wallet for the legendary franchise.
According to Nick Wingfield of The information, Bezos has “no intention” of getting into a bidding war for the Celtics, who are entertaining offers as part of a dramatic change in leadership in the coming years.
On July 1, Celtics majority shareholder Wyc Grousbeck announced that Boston Basketball Partners LLC, the team’s ownership group, was selling its shares in the team, just weeks after Boston defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals.
Considering the Celtics’ skyrocketing value since Boston Basketball Partners LLC bought the team for $360 million in 2002It should come as no surprise that someone with Bezos’ spending power is considered a viable candidate to take over operations.
“The league wants $6 billion for the Celtics,” Simmons noted on his podcast. “They don’t own their stadium. It’s a crazy price, but they’re probably going to get it. That’s it. They want the $6 billion because they want expansion teams in Seattle and Vegas. They want to get $6 billion each for both franchises for expansion, which would mean a $400 million check for all 30 NBA owners.”
If the NBA were looking to get at least $6 billion for the Celtics, Bezos would have been the ideal candidate. According to Forbes, Bezos is currently the second richest person in the world with a net worth of $198.5 billion.
Bezos has previously been mooted as a potential sports company owner, as he was ultimately outbid by Josh Harris and his ownership group. in the bidding process for the Washington Commanders in 2023.
