The Chicago Bulls are still exploring the possibility of a Zach LaVine trade. While many reports have suggested that LaVine is almost certain to start next year in Chicago, the Bulls cannot maximize their rebuild until this situation is resolved, making it a priority.

LaVine played just 25 games last season but made back-to-back All-Star appearances in 2021 and 2022 before putting together another solid campaign in 2023. If the two-time All-Star guard can stay healthy, LaVine figures to be a solid basketball player for multiple teams.

While LaVine’s health is a concern, his contract situation remains the bigger issue. LaVine is entering the third year of a five-year, $215 million contract. It’s nearly impossible for a contender in the league to get that deal without running into roster restrictions imposed by the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Any winning team trading for LaVine would have to believe his skillset complements its current roster enough to justify adding his contract to the books.

In a new article, Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report offered the Los Angeles Lakers as an option in a hypothetical blockbuster deal:

The Lakers get: Zach LaVine

Bulls get: Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jaxson Hayes

This hypothetical trade idea from Bleacher Report allows the Lakers to get a third star alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but returns much of their depth, including emerging guard Austin Reaves.

Given that all reports suggest LaVine is currently off the market, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the Lakers part ways with Reaves to acquire him.

After averaging 15.9 points in 82 games for the Lakers last season, Reaves will make just $12.9 million next season. The 26-year-old point guard won’t be eligible to enter free agency until the 2025-26 season, when he’ll decide on his $14.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
