The Brooklyn Nets don’t have a franchise point guard right now, and even if they don’t need one, they’ll face some obstacles in the short term.
Bleacher Report reporter Grant Hughes wonders who will be the Nets’ mainstay on the court next season.
“Dennis Schroder is not a natural facilitator, and Cam Thomas’s tunnel vision, obsessed with basket-making, is legendary. Both projected starters can score, but neither seems likely to bring out the best in the Brooklyn Nets’ most important players,” Hughes writes. “This is a rebuilding operation that should look to part ways with Dorian Finney-Smith, Cameron Johnson and Bogdan Bogdanović at the first opportunity. All three are dependent goal scorers who perform best when served by unselfish backs. Their market value could diminish if Schroder and Thomas fail to find them regularly, or even look for them in the first place.”
Schroder will be the team’s primary point guard and will be tasked with setting up the Nets’ offense this season. His ability to set his teammates up for success will determine who, including him, the Nets trade midway through the season.
If Schroder can prove Hughes and his critics wrong, the Nets will be a surprise, but he has an uphill battle ahead of him.
