The NBA season is just around the corner and that means it’s time for everyone to give their opinions and predictions. The latest news comes from ESPN in their annual survey of general managers, which asks top executives about burning issues that will shape the 2024-25 NBA campaign.

One of the questions the executives were asked was which rookie would win the Rookie of the Year award. This is by far the most open year for the award in a long time. Without a clear-cut No. 1 overall pick, this 2024 NBA Draft class lacks a shoe that fits to win Rookie of the Year.

That sentiment was evident in the NBA general managers’ poll, as decision-makers named Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey the 2024 Rookie of the Year, garnering eight votes. It was by far one of the most contested results, as Houston Rockets point guard Reed Sheppard received five votes. Alex Sarr received two votes, with Stephon Castle, Tristan da Silvia and Rob Dillingham each receiving one vote.

Despite the lack of consensus, Edey should be the most popular pick in the betting market, as his path to the title is simply the easiest. Across the board, the 7-foot-4 center has posted massive counting stats, and playing alongside Ja Morant, that should hold up as they are poised to be a deadly two-man game.

Along with their stellar stats, rebounds, and bucket-shots alongside Morant and his teammates, the Memphis Grizzlies are poised to become one of the league’s best stories. After a disorganized 27-win season a year ago, many expect the Beale Street Ballers to be back near the top of the West Division.

Edey will have to play a major role for Memphis to do so. That would give the rookie center a good chance at winning Rookie of the Year honors, which would be tough to match.
