At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the U.S. basketball team has assembled one of the most iconic teams in international competition history. A group led by the potential greatest player of all time, LeBron James, the greatest three-point shooter in history, Stephen Curry, and Team USA’s all-time leading scorer, Kevin Durant.

The United States men’s basketball team captured its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in 2024. Their journey to the finals wasn’t easy, as other countries began to emerge as legitimate threats to the stars and stripes.
Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and the Serbian national team put the United States through their paces in their semifinal game. They then played in the gold medal game against host France, which held off the Americans. The heroic efforts of the three greatest players of this generation propelled Team USA to Olympic immortality.

As attention turns to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, California, the makeup of Team USA will look dramatically different, as it is unlikely that James, Curry and Durant will share the court together again.
The most valuable player in Olympic basketball history, LeBron James, commented on his future with Team USA during a conversation with Donatas Urbonas of Basket News.
“I don’t see myself playing in Los Angeles in 2028. I didn’t see myself playing in Paris in 2024 either. But in four years, I don’t see myself playing.”
Team USA will experience a youth movement where young stars like Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, Ja Morant and Paolo Banchero will be asked to take on the responsibility of winning gold for the United States.
Two-time gold medalist Anthony Davis has played a big role for Team USA as a defensive stalwart on the inside. Davis will be 35 if he decides to play in Los Angeles’ games, which leaves a lot of uncertainty. Injuries have hampered the Lakers big man throughout his career, making it difficult to predict where his body will be in 2028.
The 2020 NBA champion would be the perfect veteran for the next group of national team representatives. Davis has won at every level and has had the chance to play with all-time greats who put their egos aside to accomplish something bigger than themselves. Unfortunately, as strong as Team USA’s roster is, its injury history makes it difficult to predict its participation in the 2028 Olympics.
