The pay-TV ecosystem has escaped, at least for now, the launch of Venu Sports. But let’s see if it will put an end to this seemingly formidable competitive threat.
Local broadcasts of nearly every major professional sports team in the New York area will be available via a new direct-to-consumer streaming app launching this fall by Yes Network and MSG Networks, as part of the joint venture the two partners formed earlier this year, Gotham Advanced Media & Entertainment (GAME).
Non-nationally televised games from the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and Brooklyn Nets will be available through a service billed as “the exclusive home of MSG+ and the YES app for Everywhere TV and DTC streaming.”
The combined offer offers attractive savings over subscribing to each individual app, as shown in the graph below. It will also be free for subscribers to the YES and MSG linear networks.
The Gotham Sports app can be downloaded by visiting www.Signup.GothamSports.com and is compatible with Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, iOS and Android TV and most web browsers.
“With the increasing fragmentation of media outlets delivering fan-favorite sports programming, the Gotham Sports app provides fans of our teams with an easy access point to New York area sporting events from MSG Networks and the YES Network,” Andrea Greenberg, president and CEO of MSG Networks, said in a statement.
