Hassan Whiteside spent 10 seasons in the NBA, including five as a regular starter for the Miami Heat, as he appeared in 324 games (259 starts) for Miami over five seasons.

A solid player, Whiteside averaged 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds in his five seasons with the Heat. After playing all over the league, Whiteside spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings, but never found a new long-term home base.

On a recent episode of The OGs podcast, Whiteside shared a story about Memphis Grizzlies legends Zach Randolph and Tony Allen.

“I had a workout with the Grizzlies,” Whiteside said. “It was with the Grizzlies, shoutout to Z-Bo, that’s my guy — Z-Bo and Tony Allen. To this day, those are my guys. They always showed me love, they always encouraged me, that Grit and Grind.”

“You know, Tony Allen is crazy,” Whiteside added. “He would call me at 3 a.m., and I would tell him, I was in bed with my girlfriend, and I would be like, ‘Man, I’m sleeping.’ He would be like, ‘Man, tell her to wake up! Grit and Grind, here we go!’ I would be like, ‘Man, what, man, it’s 3 a.m.’”

Randolph and Allen helped define an era of Grizzlies basketball and were two players Whiteside looked up to. Encouraged by the two veterans, Whiteside revealed how they helped him.
