PHOENIX – The NBA season is just around the corner – the Phoenix Suns’ preseason opener is just over a month away, on Oct. 6.
Despite that, the Suns still have a roster spot open and how that spot is filled could really go either way, from a 2-for-1 trade to a free agent signing. Maybe even Jalen Bridges gets a full NBA contract if the rookie continues to impress.
That being said, who are the three free agents still on the market that would make the most sense for the Suns, ignoring everything else?
Crowder spent two seasons as an active member of the Suns and was a key contributor to the 2021 runner-up team.
He was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks before being signed as a free agent this summer, so he knows first-year Suns coach Mike Budenholzer well.
Crowder also remains friends with Devin Booker – everyone he allegedly had a problem with before his departure is no longer part of the franchise.
Crowder’s days as a starter-level player are also behind him, so that would be an insignificant factor here – he could just focus on being a niche depth player who could make an impact on both ends when needed.
THT is undoubtedly the most important “high risk” signature here.
The 2020 second-round pick was often touted as a prospect with All-Star ceiling during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers — and was a key part of the Russell Westbrook trade to LA.
He failed to gain much traction in Utah despite constant opportunities and flashes – which has now led him to free agency.
The upside is certainly there for THT to thrive – especially within a talented attacking team led by a quality coach.
His role would probably be limited, but that should not be a proposition to rule out.
Covington’s best years are behind him. He’s also rarely available compared to earlier in his career.
He could still fill a valuable third-line role, where he would mentor rookie Ryan Dunn while providing space in specialized situations.
Covington seems like an unlikely conclusion, especially two months into free agency, but he still seems like he should be mentioned after a largely successful career.
