The Philadelphia 76ers plan to honor legend Allen Iverson with a sculpture outside the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex, the team announced Friday.
The sculpture’s unveiling will take place on Friday, April 12, the 10th anniversary of Philadelphia’s retirement of Iverson’s jersey.
Iverson’s statue will be the 10th to be installed outside the 76ers facility, joining legends Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, Maurice Cheeks, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, Hall Greer, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone and Dolph Schayes.
“Allen Iverson is one of the greatest 76ers players of all time and one of the most iconic players in NBA history, and we are thrilled to honor his accomplishments with a well-deserved Legends sculpture Walk,” said team owner Josh Harris. and David Blitzer said in a statement. “Paying tribute to the legends who paved the way for our franchise is not only the right thing to do; it is an incredible source of inspiration for the current and future generations of 76ers players and staff who walk in every day in our practice complex, as well as for children in the city of Philadelphia and as a whole. We look forward to celebrating Allen’s legacy on April 12.
Iverson, a 14-year veteran, spent most of his career in Philadelphia. He was drafted by the 76ers in 1996, where he remained until a blockbuster trade sent him to the Denver Nuggets in 2006-07. After a few years away from Philadelphia, Iverson rejoined the team for part of the 2009-10 season during his final NBA campaign.
During his time in Philadelphia, he led the team to its only Finals appearance this century in 2001, before being named NBA MVP. He led the league in scoring four times and was named an All-Star 11 times, winning All-Star Game MVP twice. In 2016, Iverson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
