The news cycle surrounding Amazon founder Jeff Bezos considering buying the Boston Celtics has lasted less than a week, but that hasn’t stopped The Ringer’s Bill Simmons and Fox’s Jason McIntyre from putting on their tinfoil hats and coming up with an angle anyway.
So when leaks from the Bezos camp confirmed that he was ultimately not interested in buying the team, the team Forgive my opinion I had to tease Simmons and McIntyre for their stupidity.
On Monday, Simmons hinted on his podcast and on social media that he was hearing legitimate rumors coming out of Boston. that Bezos was a candidate to buy the teamwhich went on sale last month. In response, McIntyre suggested The herd that Simmons was only dropping the news to boost his notoriety in the context of contract negotiations with Spotify.
Friday the Forgive my opinionProducer Hank Lockwood summed up the Bezos-Simmons-McIntyre saga and joked that it was absurd that Simmons needed to invent Celtics rumors to get attention as one of the world’s biggest sports figures.
“There’s levels of bullshit that I don’t understand,” Dan “Big Cat” Katz said. “So he’s saying Simmons is in a contract dispute, so Simmons decided to talk about the Celtics for once?”

Simmons is of course the most connected Boston sports broadcaster in any medium. He literally started out as an online writer under the name The Boston Sports Guy and wrote a book about the Boston Red Sox.
The idea that Simmons needs leverage with Spotify is kind of funny, but it’s even crazier to imagine that the way he’d get it would be by discussing a topic he mentions on nearly every podcast episode…the Celtics.
Colin Cowherd, from Batman to McIntyre’s Robin on The herdhad a similar response when McIntyre revealed his theory live on air Monday.
Jason McIntyre has a pretty specific theory about why Bill Simmons reported on Jeff Bezos and the Boston Celtics… pic.twitter.com/P1PhMcLleV

“He didn’t pass it on, he probably heard it,” Cowherd said. “Why are you so cynical? Can you just acknowledge that people potentially have inside information?”
Unless the Bezos leaks are false and he comes back at some point, this will be an event to forget. But let’s not forget the wackiness of McIntyre’s position on the matter.
