For some NBA fans and Boston Celtics, Hall of Fame Great Man Bill Russell is a name from the distant past. An apocryphal character whose 11 titles and five MVP titles date back to a distant time, in a very different league.
But for the NBA itself and the Celtics organization, the presence of Russel Russell was never far away, even during the years he was out of the public eye, as the Boston great continued to support and mentor players and coaches. The Celtics in particular benefited from his love for the organization, and even the city, and several of them have recounted how his influence affected their own careers.
Watch the embedded video below to hear Doc Rivers and Kendrick Perkins talk about Russell’s impact on them and the 2008 Banner 17 championship team.
