Nathan Barrett was originally from Mississauga but lived in Florida.

Toronto Raptors star RJ Barrett is mourning the death of his younger brother, Nathan Tyler Barrett.

The Raptors and Canada Basketball shared a statement from the Barrett family on Thursday that Nathan Barrett died Tuesday, surrounded by his family, church and friends.

RJ and Nathan Barrett’s father, Rowan Barrett, is the general manager of Canada Basketball.

The Barrett family is originally from Mississauga. Nathan had followed in his brother’s footsteps and played basketball at Montverde Academy in Florida.

“Even though our family is devastated by this great loss, we will continue to cherish the memories and time spent together,” the statement said.

“Nathan was a strong-willed, God-fearing young man. He was caring, kind, loving, compassionate, creative, admirable and motivated.

The cause of death was not provided.

“Nathan was only with us for a short time in Grade 7 before moving to Florida, but every time he came back to Mississauga the boys would connect,” said Chris Stewart who coached Nathan when he was with the Mississauga Monarchs.

RJ Barrett did not play in Toronto’s 113-104 loss to the Pistons in Detroit on Wednesday.

The family asked for privacy while saying they appreciated the love, support and prayers they were receiving.

“Even though his time with us was brief, he will live forever in our hearts,” the statement said.
