The Cavaliers won’t be taking their collective talents to South Beach, but they will be taking them to Florida for the start of their 2024 training camp.

The Cavs will hold a media day on Sept. 30 in Cleveland, then travel to the IMG (International Management Group) Academy in Bradenton, Fla., for six days of training camp beginning Oct. 1.

The Cavs’ first of four preseason games will be Oct. 8 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in a contest against the Chicago Bulls.

“The city of Sarasota and IMG Academy in Bradenton provide the perfect setting for our training camp this year,” Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman said in a statement. “This is a unique opportunity for us to utilize a world-class facility away from our usual environment, providing an excellent setting to build team cohesion and culture.”

“We would like to thank the IMG Academy and the surrounding area for their warm hospitality. Their state-of-the-art facilities and supportive communities will help us prepare for the upcoming season.”

The Cavaliers will be the first NBA team to host a training camp at the IMG Academy. It’s a win-win situation for the Cavs and IMG.

“IMG Academy is thrilled to welcome the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers to our world-class campus for their 2024-25 NBA training camp this fall,” IMG Academy Chief Operating Officer Mike Milliron said in a statement. “Our state-of-the-art environment, facilities, hospitality and IMG Academy’s proven track record of consistently hosting professional sports leagues, organizations and players make us an ideal partner for the Cavaliers as they prepare for their upcoming NBA season. We look forward to providing their staff and players with an unparalleled experience on the IMG Academy campus.”

The Browns did something similar in 2023 and again this summer when they opened training camp at the Greenbrier complex in West Virginia.

One difference between what the Browns did and what the Cavaliers plan to do is that none of the Cavaliers’ practices are open to the public. The Greenbrier practices were closed to fans, but six practices were open to the public when the Browns returned to Berea on Aug. 4. But the idea of building camaraderie away from home is the same.
