The Cleveland Cavaliers have once again been seriously injured. Can they also manage to overcome this situation?
Even though the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently only a half-game out of the second seed in the Eastern Conference standings, it has been anything but smooth sailing for the young team and many expected to make a big move forward this season. Plagued by injuries for much of the season, the fact that the Cavs were able to remain a top three seed in the East throughout the entire season is nothing short of miraculous. But that could be attributed to the progress this team has made this season.
And with the start of the NBA Playoffs in a little over a month, the Cavs will have to overcome another big injury. After suffering a sprained ankle, there’s a chance Cavs big man Evan Mobley could end up missing an “extended amount of time.” Not exactly what Cleveland needs as they prepare for the playoffs.
Cleveland has already had to deal with the absence of Donovan Mitchell, who is recovering from a knee injury. Even though this injury is not considered long-term, the injuries are once again starting to pile up for Cleveland. And that’s not what the team wants to see heading into the playoffs.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have already dealt with serious injuries to both Darius Garland and Mobley so far this season. Garland and Mobley have already missed 24 games each so far this season. Even Mitchell has missed his fair share of competitions this season due to injury, checking in 15 times so far.
Given that the Cavs still have the 13th-toughest schedule over the period, this is by no means good news. Even though the Cavs sit comfortably among the top three seeds in the Eastern Conference, the last thing they want is to enter the playoffs shorthanded.
The hope is that none of the key player injuries the Cavs are currently dealing with should impact their playoff availability. However, it is certainly a red flag that they continue to raise.
At this point, the Cavs’ goal should simply be to get to the playoffs healthy. If they do, they should take advantage of their chances of winning at least one playoff series. However, especially given how this season has gone, that’s far from a guarantee.
