In recent years, the Detroit Pistons have managed to assemble a group of promising young talents. While some of these prospects are being hailed as future stars, one of them is considered one of the most overlooked players in the league.

Recently, people from Bleacher Report compiled a list of ten NBA players who don’t get enough attention. Among the hidden gems mentioned is Pistons backup Marcus Sasser.

Sasser is a fiery scorer and a fiery shooter, but he’s also a fiery defender and a capable shot creator. He should have a long future in this league, and if an All-Star selection or two isn’t in the cards, maybe a Sixth Man of the Year award could be.

Sasser was selected in the first round by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2023 draft but was later acquired by the Pistons. The 1.88 m guard played in 71 games last season, averaging 8.3 points per game, 1.8 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists per game.

Sasser brings a much-needed skill to the Pistons: outside shooting. As a rookie, he shot nearly 38 percent from beyond the arc on about three attempts per game.

Becoming an All-Star talent may seem like a stretch for the diminutive guard, but he could become a productive sixth man for the Pistons. Given that Detroit has a giant-sized guard in Cade Cunningham, Sasser can play with the starters and the second unit without any issues.

As a sophomore, Sasser appears poised for a larger role under new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. The Pistons don’t have an obvious replacement for Cunningham, a role Sasser thrived in late last season. He’s put together a string of impressive performances as the second unit’s primary point guard. One of Sasser’s best performances came in February against the Portland Trail Blazers, when he had 17 points and 11 assists as a backup.

Given the flashes he showed when given the chance to play big minutes as a rookie, Sasser has a good case to make himself a hidden gem in the league. If he can take a step forward in his second year, he could establish himself as a long-term piece for the Pistons.
