Most of the offseason has been spent discussing Victor Wembanyama, and rightly so. He’s a franchise player, a generational talent and every other superlative you can think of to describe a unique athlete like him. But there are also high expectations for other players on this team, most notably Devin Vassell.

Vassell has improved every year since being drafted by San Antonio in 2020, and Spurs fans shouldn’t expect that to change. Based on the model he’s established, no one should be surprised if Dev cracks the NBA’s top-10 shooting guard, but he’ll have to prove it first. He hasn’t done it yet, and HoopsHype classified it accordinglybased on what they know now.

13 out of 30 puts you just above average in terms of ranking among your NBA positions. Now, the list isn’t perfect (Austin Reaves at No. 8 needs serious reconsideration), but it’s not far off. Spurs fans have had several online debates with Houston Rockets fans over who is better between Jalen Green and Vassell.

It’s easy to root for your guy, but the reality is they have similar numbers, and only one of them exploded for an extended period, averaging 29 points per game during a significant three-week stretch late in the season as they battled for a play-in spot.

The Georgia native is capable of doing the same thing, but he needs to show that kind of performance on film before he can put himself above guys who have already shown it. His decision-making will determine whether or not he takes the step up. because the capacity is thereIf he takes more efficient shots, drives aggressively, and gets to the free throw line more often, he could catapult himself into the top 10. Oh, and get back to defending like a Twitter response from Kevin Durant. We love it.
