The 2024 Paris Olympics ended last week, but very early discussions about the 2028 Olympics have already begun among NBA fans. One of those discussions is whether or not Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum will join Team USA.
Former NBA All-Star and Memphis Grizzlies guard Gilbert Arenas thinks Tatum won’t be, especially after Tatum gave a non-binding response about his return. Tatum was interviewed by ESPN where he was asked if he would come back, and this is his answer.
“It was a tough personal experience on the court, but I’m not going to make a decision based on my emotions,” Tatum told ESPN. “If you asked me now if I was going to play in 2028 – that’s four years away and I [would have] “I’m going to take some time to think about it. So I’m not going to make a decision based on what I’ve experienced or what I’ve felt individually.”
The moment Gilbert Arenas heard this answer, he immediately predicted that Jayson Tatum would not return in 2028. During an episode of The Gil’s Arenas, the former NBA star gave a NSFW explanation as to why Tatum will not return.

“If I wanted to play and the answer was yes, then I’d just say, ‘Fuck yeah!’ Now it’s a fuck no,” Arenas said. “That leaves my options open… Ask Derrick White right now, would you be in 2028? ‘Fuck yeah, call me.’ If you start caring like that, yeah, it’s slow, f**k you.”
2028 is still a long way off, and anything can happen between now and then. Immediately ruling out Jayson Tatum’s presence on Team USA so soon would probably be a prediction that has a high chance of not coming true.
