After 10 seasons in the NBA, Joe Harris is ending his career. On Thursday, the Brooklyn Nets announced on social media that the three-point shooting specialist was retiring from the NBA.
It makes sense that the Nets would be the ones to announce Harris’ retirement, given that he played in Brooklyn for seven seasons, his longest stint with any team during his NBA career. In Brooklyn, Harris established himself as one of the most talented three-point shooters in league history. He finishes his career with the fifth-highest three-point shooting percentage in NBA history, averaging 43.6 percent from three-point range.
During his third season in Brooklyn, Harris achieved his most notable feat when he beat two-time MVP Stephen Curry and Buddy Hield in the league’s three-point contest during All-Star weekend.
With the Nets, Harris averaged 11.6 points on 48 percent shooting and 44 percent from three-point range.
Prior to his time in Brooklyn, Harris spent his first two NBA seasons playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who selected him with the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA draft.
Harris finished his career playing for the Detroit Pistons last season, where he only played 16 games with the franchise. Constant roster changes under former coach Monty Williams and injuries took a toll on Harris’ time in Detroit. With the Pistons, Harris averaged just 2.4 points.
His last NBA game came earlier this year on February 7. He scored two points in a rare Pistons win over the Sacramento Kings. The next day, which was the league’s trade deadline, Harris left Detroit. The franchise embarked on a massive roster overhaul, trading and releasing several players before the 4 p.m. deadline. The Pistons made the decision to part ways with Harris.
Detroit acquired Harris and two second-round draft picks from the Nets in cash last offseason. The addition of Harris was intended to bolster Detroit’s bench and provide the team with another three-point shooter.
Over the course of his career, Harris averaged 10.3 points, three rebounds and 1.6 assists.
