The NBA’s free agency period may be over, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead to next year’s class. Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is among the players expected to hit free agency, but could the former Chicago Bulls star really be leaving South Beach?
Butler opted not to sign a contract extension with the Heat last offseason, saying he would play out his contract and evaluate his options after that.
Brian Lewis of the New York Post It was reported over the weekend that there was a possibility Butler would consider the Brooklyn Nets as a potential free agent destination.
“Butler is not only open to Brooklyn, he’s very keen on Brooklyn,” Brian Lewis said. “He’s not a Nets player and he may never be one. But to dismiss that out of hand is stupid. Butler has decided he’s going to play next season and will not extend to Miami before he retires in 2025. He seems determined to enter free agency, even if (when?) the Heat ends up making him a concrete offer.”

The Brooklyn Nets are loaded with draft capital and are projected to have max salary cap space in the summer of 2025. Jimmy Butler and another star on his way to New York’s second team could certainly make things interesting in the Eastern Conference.
Jimmy Butler will make $48.7 million in the 2024-25 season and has a $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season. At this point, it appears he could opt out in search of a major long-term contract.
