Patrick Beverley, a 12-year NBA veteran, signed with Hapoel Tel Aviv BC of the Israeli Basketball League earlier this summer. Deciding to head overseas rather than sign another NBA minimum contract, Beverley recently explained the reasons for his decision.
“That’s what people don’t understand, I can play basketball,” Beverley said on his Pat Bev podcast. “I started putting the ball in the hole… In my European career, I was MVP of the same league that I’m going back to… Obviously, you come to the NBA and you have to play different roles, but now I’m going back to a role where there’s only seven seconds left, give me the ball, watch me swing. The isolation goes away, I can play basketball.”

The former defensive back added: “I played a big role, I had a phenomenal NBA career while I was in the NBA. I don’t want to sit in a corner. I played with the Bucks, we won Game 5, ball in my hands, double-double. Then Game 6, we’re kind of in shape and the ball’s out of my hands. Not because I did anything wrong, but because that’s the hierarchy.”
Beverley’s comments were shared by SportsCenter on Instagram, with the post garnering more than 279,000 likes and 2,900 comments. Several former NBA stars responded to Beverley’s remarks.
Stephen Jackson (@_stak5_): “Well, overseas, he’s the best bet, because he was on the bench or in the corner. He made the right choice. Bye. Control your own narrative.”
Nate Robinson (@Naterobinson): “Let go of Pat, that was the team I played for, they are good people.”

Like Beverley, all three players spent time with the LA Clippers during their respective NBA careers.
In addition to his time with the Clippers, Beverley spent time with the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks.
