Former Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash recently attended Goran Dragic’s farewell charity game along with other NBA legends. The game, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, gave Nash the opportunity to speak to the media about his first and only coaching stint with the Nets.
Nash spoke to Eurohoops on his plans to stop coaching, focusing on his family.
“Coaching has been a great experience,” Nash said. “I didn’t set out to be a career coach. I don’t think coaching was going to be my career. I’m coaching my kids, teaching them about life. I’ve earned the ability to choose, and it’s rewarding. There are always projects, affiliates, and partnerships. I always have something to do, I’m focused on my family.”
Nash was the Nets’ head coach for just over two seasons, finishing with a 94-67 record. Coaching Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden was another task on top of coaching the rest of the team, as there were three ball-dominant All-NBA players to watch. The 2018 Hall of Famer spoke about the player-coach dynamic he experienced with the Nets.
“I didn’t plan on being a coach, there was a unique situation in Brooklyn that was knocking on my door,” Nash said. “It was a quick transition. You have to deal with a different dynamic. A lot of it is managing the personalities, between the front office, the players and the agents. That’s a big part of my job. All the dynamics, the personalities and the power that players have today.”
Despite his positive record, Nash’s time with the Nets did not go as planned and ended bitterly. He now has time to step away from the NBA and focus on his family.
