The Golden State Warriors failed to acquire their top two trade targets this summer, which many reports said were Paul George and Lauri Markkanen. Neither the LA Clippers nor the Utah Jazz seemed interested in Golden State’s offer, which multiple reports said did not include Jonathan Kuminga or Brandin Podziemski.
Now set to enter next season with a roster similar to last year’s that missed the playoffs, the Warriors are hoping for either a significant jump in their young players or an unexpected star available before the trade deadline.
If neither of those scenarios happens, it will be another season where the Warriors don’t have a championship-caliber roster built around Steph Curry.

In a recent episode of The TK ShowThe Athletic’s Sam Amick breaks down what’s in store for Golden State and who they might be interested in.
“The wheels have to start moving somewhere,” Amick said of Golden State needing a star player available via trade. “Like you said, not in free agency, but in trade. Two guys come to mind, Jimmy Butler is going to be a free agent next summer. He didn’t get an extension. The Warriors, as you know, are interested in that player and I think they probably made some calls over the summer. That name comes to mind.”
As the nature of this discussion makes clear, Amick isn’t saying Butler is available. That said, Golden State’s best hope right now is a team like Miami that underperforms next season, which would make a player like Butler available before the trade deadline.
Butler has a $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season that would allow him to become a free agent next summer.
