The section is known for being loud and a constant source of cheer that has often drawn the attention of both Hawks players and opposing players, who are greeted with chants.

“Over the past 10 years, I have enjoyed watching the group evolve from afar, and while some things have changed, the heart and passion of this group has remained as strong as ever,” said the email, attributed to Drew Frank, the Hawks’ director of game presentation. “This group has always meant a lot to me personally, as I know it has to many of you, which makes it so difficult for me to tell you that the Kia 6th Man squad will not be returning for the upcoming season.”

The email sparked concern among avid fans on social media, expressing dismay at the loss of a community cultivated over the years.

Following the email’s release, a Hawks spokesperson clarified that the section was undergoing a planned rebrandingThe lack of details about the name change has led to confusion and questions among Hawks fans. That concern has led to a petition on change.org to keep the Sixth Man section free.

“As of August 20, 2024, the Atlanta Hawks have decided to get rid of this incredible section so they can sell these seats,” the petition description reads. “Atlanta Hawks management has decided to prioritize profit over fan atmosphere. This will take away a lot of the fun and spirit of Atlanta Hawks home games.”

THE petition had reached 125 of its goal of 200 signatures.

A person familiar with the situation told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the team would announce details of the name change closer to the NBA season. However, the team has repeatedly said the section will remain, though it did not provide further details.
