The Houston Rockets will soon add a new roof to their arena, according to a report from KHOU 11’s Jason Bristol.

The Harris County Houston Sports Authority, a local government agency created by the Harris County Commissioners Court and the Houston City Council in 1997, approved the team’s proposal Tuesday to build a new roof.

The renovation will replace the Toyota Center’s current roof, which has been part of the building since 2002. The arena’s ceiling renovation will cost between $7.5 million and $8 million, with the organization footing the entire bill rather than the city or its taxpayers.

According to Bristol, removing the current roof of the Toyota Center and building a new edition will take approximately five months, with construction expected to begin in September and be completed in March.

Although the Rockets are undergoing major renovations, Bristol said team and stadium operations officials noted the change should not affect home games or other events.

The new roof at the Toyota Center comes with a 20-year warranty and could withstand hurricane-force winds of up to 146 miles per hour.

Houston’s new dome will be a nice upgrade from the Rockets’ home arena and should be completed in time for the playoffs, when the team will enjoy more national television attention assuming it can crack the Western Conference’s top 10.

The Toyota Center opened in October 2003 and was home to the Rockets and the Houston Aeros, an American Hockey League team, before the Aeros moved. The arena was also the home of the Houston Comets, a WNBA team that played its final game in 2008.

Before the former owner of the Rockets Leslie Alexander After reaching an agreement with the Harris County Houston Sports Authority to build the Toyota Center in the early 2000s, Houston played its home games at the Summit.
