Steph Curry is a busy man.
He already has plenty on his plate as a player, entering his 16th season with the Warriors, but he also has several interests and ambitions off the court, such as his particularly successful golf gameher massive partnership with Under Armourand his recent foray into television and cinema.
That’s not all. Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area last year that he would eventually would like to own an NBA team after his retirement as a player, and he expressed this enthusiasm again on Tuesday on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.”
“I saw [Michael] “Jordan’s doing it,” Curry said of the NBA legend, who was the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets for 13 years. “You have guys in the league now that are taking the steps to become legitimate players as far as [NBA] possibly expanding in a few years.
“So for me it’s definitely on the table.”
So what would Steph Curry, the owner, look like? His mindset seems to be a product of his playing environment under the Warriors owners Joe Lacob And Pierre Guber.
“I think I could do a good job of helping maintain the quality of the NBA right now, the things that I’ve learned over the course of my career and what it takes to run a championship organization,” Curry said. “The Lacob family and Guber … you see how you treat first-class players and the investment that it takes to create that first-class experience so that we feel taken care of, and it allows us to play at a very high level.”
Curry also recognized the importance of supporting not only the organization’s players, but also the surrounding community.
“Oakland and San Francisco are my adopted cities,” Curry said. “I’ve been here 16 years. You also have to be authentic to the community and the fans that you represent and that fill the seats.
“Creating that bond is as important as putting the ball in the basket. You can’t have one without the other.”
Warriors fans need not worry, however. Curry is in no rush to end his playing career to become a team owner.
“Obviously, I know I have a lot more to accomplish on the court before I get another job in the league,” Curry added. “But I definitely want to be a part of the ownership landscape.”
It’s safe to say that if Curry is as good an owner as he is a player, he’ll be equally successful in this endeavor.
