PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns are about two months away from their 2024-25 regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers.

This is accompanied by traditional power rankings before the start of the regular season, including the best players at each position.

Suns guard Devin Booker has officially taken over as SG2 — at least according to HoopsHype by most recent positional rankings.

Booker comes in just below Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves for shooting guards — and 13th in the league overall.

The perpetual debate over who is better might very well be a trivial matter, but Booker makes a strong case against Edwards for whether the topic should be relevant or not.

First, Booker is a more polished offensive player. He’s more polished as a playmaker, a better scorer, and more mobile in different scenarios on that side of the ball — as evidenced by his performance in Paris.

Edwards has the edge on defense, but Booker has an equally significant edge on offense, in addition to being a more experienced player in the playoffs and being more consistent in the regular season.

If anything, Donovan Mitchell, who is number 5 in this particular ranking, is the best case to dethrone Booker as SG1.

Mitchell is a more consistent force in the playoffs, he’s more explosive when it comes to attacking various defensive coverages and he’s arguably better on defense.

Booker has generally been viewed as the more lethal scorer, while proving he is capable of leading teams on deeper playoff runs than the Cleveland Cavaliers star.

Ultimately, Booker’s established 2023 playoff run, Olympic stardom, and being arguably the most complete of the top 3 at the position put him in pole position to win the title of best at the position.
