The Detroit Pistons were one of the most feared franchises in the late 80s and even early 2000s. The “Bad Boy Pistons” led by Isiah Thomas won multiple NBA championships, beating teams like Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics, Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and Magic, and Kareem’s Showtime Lakers. But the franchise has suffered an epic downfall in recent years.
Thomas couldn’t help but express his disappointment after witnessing last season’s betrayal. In an exclusive interview with MichiganLiveThe Pistons legend couldn’t even feign a positive attitude when talking about his former franchise.
He highlighted the Pistons’ rich history that has always brought high standards to the franchise,
“When I talk about the Detroit Pistons, I always say the Pistons have very high standards. At one point, our goal was to be mentioned in the same category as the Celtics and the Lakers.”
However, the Pistons posted the longest losing streak in NBA history last season, finishing with a pitiful 14-68 record.
So when asked about the current state of the team, HE I spoke with a heavy heart.
“Obviously, over the last 10 years or so, we have fallen dramatically. When you look at the Pistons right now, their identity in terms of who you would say is a Piston, they’ve lost that, and they have to get that back.
Isiah He dedicated his entire career to the Pistons, playing all 13 years of his NBA career for the team. He led Detroit to three NBA Finals appearances and eventually won the first two titles in franchise history.
It’s safe to assume now that Isiah doesn’t expect the team to return to its former glory right away. But the franchise needs to put a process in place to get the team back on track. They already have a bright young talent in Cade Cunningham.
The management will now look to attract more suitable players around him and recruit talented youngsters.
