Memphis Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey recently hit the gym with teammate Ja Morant, and the two gave fans their first opportunity to see them on the court together.
Morant posted clips on Instagram from the workout, which took place at Southern Methodist University in University Park, Texas. They worked on several plays down the court, with Edey setting screens and rolling to the basket for lobs in a few situations.
The two-time All-Star has already expressed his excitement about playing with Edey, as the session offered a glimpse of the two players working together. Morant watched Edey during summer league and was impressed with him in a limited sample size.
Edey led Purdue to the national title last season, averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and two assists on 62.3 percent shooting. He became the first player in more than 50 years to be unanimously voted Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons.
The ninth overall pick was limited to two summer league appearances due to two ankle injuries. He recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds, four blocked shots and one assist in his debut on July 8 and had six points and three rebounds in his second game on July 18.
His exact role next season is still unknown, but the 6-foot-4 should fill several needs for the Grizzlies with his size and ability to protect the paint. He’ll also be able to create space for his teammates in pick-and-roll situations, something Morant is eager to see in action.
