The Memphis Grizzlies had a rough season last season, finishing 13th in the West Division, ahead of the Spurs and Blazers. We all know what led to the demise of a team that legitimately looked like a playoff threat when their franchise superstar, Yes Morantwas absent from the court. With Morant on the court, the Grizzlies went 6-3, averaging 112.7 points per game. But without him, they went 21-52, averaging just 105.0 points.
Clearly, Memphis works best with Ja. And with that in mind, the 25-year-old appears to be focused entirely on rewriting their history for the upcoming season. He is joined in that endeavor by none other than former Purdue sensation and Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey. The 7-foot-4 Canadian was a trailblazer for the Boilermakers, leading his team to the NCAA Championship game his senior year.
The latest news surrounding him and Morant is a viral workout video on X. Practicing pick-and-rolls at Southern Methodist University’s basketball facility, the session provides a glimpse of what we can expect from the duo for the 2024-25 season. The insane clip was tweeted to X by a Grizzlies fan page, with the following caption: “Ja Morant and Zach Edey’s pick and rolls will feed families this season,” followed by a spinning head and a flame emoji. Needless to say, this had fans salivating.

Ja Morant and Zach Edey together? This could change everything for the Grizzlies! React!
Interestingly, the move comes after a scathing review from former NBA legend Sam Mitchell. The 60-year-old notably played for the Minnesota Timberwolves during his 18-year NBA career. He has worked as an analyst and talk show co-host for SiriusXM NBA Radio, The 2007 COTY criticized Morant’s questionable actions.
“He didn’t miss the whole season because of injuries, he missed the whole season because of himself. And so, not only does he have to tread lightly when he comes back through that door, but he has to have a sense of humility when he comes back through that door. Because, dammit, it’s your fault. You’re the one who left your teammates high and dry… You made decisions off the field that jeopardized yourself, your status on the team and the success of your team. So, to me, you can’t just walk through the door and start over like before,” he said in a recent episode.
He was, of course, referring to Ja’s 25-game suspension for brandishing firearms on social media. During that span, the Grizzlies went 6-19. Two months prior, the NBA suspended the 2020 ROTY for eight games for similar conduct. And then there was that fight with a teenager. The latest update on the 2022 incident, however, was in Ja Morant’s favor. NBC SportsShelby County Judge Carol Chumney ruled that the two-time All-Star acted in self-defense.
Regardless, these were dark days for a team that finished second in the 2022-23 season. But it looks like the Memphis faithful won’t have to worry about such incidents anymore. Let’s take a look at what fans had to say in response to Ja-Edey’s workout video.
“It’s over for the league”: Ja Morant and Zach Edey’s hard work before preseason has fans excited
With the Memphis Grizzlies As they searched for a starting center, the main concern for almost everyone was how he would fit in alongside Morant in pick-and-rolls. Morant’s mastery of pick-and-rolls needs no explanation! A combination of power and speed while changing directions as easily as butter with hard-hitting centers like Jonas Valanciunas and Steven Adams has crushed many opponents.
So seeing the 300-pound Edey work in tandem with the agile Morant was enough to make fans breathe a sigh of relief. And one of that fan’s first reactions was to issue a warning to the league. “It’s over for the league” commented the most loyal fans of the NBA. A pretty heavy responsibility for Morant and Edey, but it shows the confidence they have in this new partnership. The next fan had a similar line of thought. “Ohh yeah, that’s what I really want to see, we’re back, baby.”
Tweeting a photo shared by Ja, the Grizzlies fan page wrote: “Ja and Edey in the lab” followed by a sideways emoji, probably referring to the impatience to see them on the pitch.

Meanwhile, the next individual had high praise for the duo. “HOF BRICKWALL + HOF QUICK FIRST = CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD. » While the Hall of Fame is a certainty, Memphis fans will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the championship title. For one thing, they will have an uphill battle in the West alone. And this is a season when too many teams are competing for that Larry O’Brien, in whose absence some of them will have to pay dearly.
And finally, the official LeBron James fan page, Bronx Muse, commented, “I will definitely be watching the Grizzlies next season.” followed by a pair of fire emojis. A sentiment echoed by many, no doubt.
