DeMar DeRozan has officially become a fellow traveler in the NBA. After his stints with the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls, he now finds himself playing alongside De’Aaron Fox at the Sacramento Kings system. This also means that he has worked under many legendary coaches of the 21st century. Despite the myriad of greats he has played for, one will always stand out and that is coach Gregg Popovitch.
The Spurs’ big boss is always a wonderful experience for any player he meets. Gregg Popovich has helped many players succeed, from David Robinson and Tim Duncan to Victor Wembanyama. Before Pop had the Alien on his side, he first I had to coach DeMar DeRozan. How did it work? Well, it looks like the master of the medium I had a lot of learning under the Spurs system.
“It was like a three-year college that I graduated from when I was in San Antonio. Pop challenged me on a whole other level that I had never encountered before. Especially in terms of understanding how to be a point guard, how to play off the ball, how to make your teammates a lot better, make them comfortable and make them find different ways to have confidence in the game. And I transferred all of that with my scoring ability to Chicago. I put it all together,” the Kings veteran said during his appearance on the P Show with Paul George podcast.
What are the expectations for DeMar DeRozan when he joins the Kings?

The first thing is that he will be the veteran of the team who will guide Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox. In addition, his statistics should also be solid despite his 35 years. Last season, DeRozan proved that he still has plenty of legs after playing 79 games with the Bulls.

His numbers with the Midwest team weren’t bad either. DeRozan shot 48 percent from the field at all levels for an average of 24 points. Offensively, he’s still very useful as a point guard as he’s dishing out 5.3 assists per game. Defensively, the Kings can still expect him to do big things as he’s grabbing 4.3 rebounds while stealing the ball 1.1 times per game.
Gregg Popovich has clearly shown DeRozan the secret to longevity in the league. While he has already left the Spurs system, the Kings could certainly benefit from his veteran talent.
