A report surfaced last week that The Los Angeles Lakers had “their sights set” on the acquisition Luka Doncic in the future. While their dream will likely remain just that, not everyone associated with the Lakers would be happy about the The Dallas Mavericks the star as the main attraction.

Former Lakers champion Robert Horry went on his show, the “Bob the Big Shot” podcast this week and warned LA that you don’t want to have someone like Luka Doncic as your point guard. “He’s not the best defender right now and that’s the problem with the Lakers! You have to have athletic guys who can play defense and Luka, he can score with the best of them, but we also know you have to take beers out of his hands… He’ll be good but he’s not going to be what you need.”

The idea that Doncic isn’t a good enough defender or that he’s out of shape is exhausted at this point. Doncic simply took his team to the NBA Finals Two years after leading the Mavs to the Western Conference Finals. Whether he’s an average defender or not clearly doesn’t matter if he can give his team 30 points and 10 assists. What matters are the players around him.

Nico Harrison and the rest of management have done a great job surrounding Doncic with talent, trading for Kyrie Irving in 2023, writing of Dereck Lively II and acquisition PJ Washington, Daniel GaffordAnd Klay Thompson This year, all the moves are made with Doncic in mind.

Doncic has two years and a player option remaining on his contract, but he will be eligible for his next supermax extension next season, which will be worth more than $346 million. As long as Dallas remains competitive and continues to surround him with top-tier talent, he will be happy to remain with the only NBA franchise he has played for so far.

The Lakers will always be linked to future NBA talent. As the most accomplished franchise in professional sports, they have that right, but Doncic seems like an aspiration too far away to be attainable.
