After the Dallas Mavericks traded Grant Williams, Richaun Holmes and Seth Curry for PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford, they had a choice to make.

Just when Spencer Dinwiddie could be bought out, the Mavs reportedly expressed interest.

After 15 games, it’s clear he made the wrong decision. Dinwiddie is averaging 4.6 points and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 35.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from downtown. His effectiveness has diminished since he’s been in Los Angeles, and it doesn’t seem like he’s getting the role he thought he would.
When Dinwiddie spoke to reporters earlier this week, it seemed like his role might not be as big as he hoped. In an article by Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, he dives into Dinwiddie’s comments on his role and what exactly do they mean. Woike never suggested he thought Dinwiddie was complaining, but you can judge how he feels about his role in Los Angeles.
“As you see, some games are 0-on-3, some are three-on-three,” Dinwiddie said. “So sometimes in terms of the sexy stuff, it’s hard to get anything out of it.”
Dinwiddie says it’s hard to get anything out of his games with these limited shots, but later explains that he makes his impact felt by doing the little things. He later compares himself to Reggie Bullock, which puts things into even more perspective.
“Like I said, it’s technically foreign to me in terms of what I’ve done in my career,” Dinwiddie said. “I sometimes feel like I’m in the role of Reggie Bullock and sometimes being rated on a Spencer scale. Whereas on a Reggie Bullock scale – no shooting, again, that’s my dog, like I said, he was great for us – I feel like I’m doing really well. On the Spencer scale, obviously, I’m doing great. [poor]. But I’m not in that Spencer position either, you feel me?”
Dinwiddie said he knew he wouldn’t have such a big role, but his next comment shows he knows how good he can be, and it’s obvious he can’t be that type of player in Los Angeles with current role. he has. Bullock was a key piece for the Mavs in the 2022 Western Conference Finals, but he and Dinwiddie are completely different players.
Dinwiddie obviously understands this, but says he’s being rated as if he’s playing a “Spencer role” when he’s actually in a role Bullock would play. That’s a harsh reality for someone as capable as Dinwiddie.
“When I was co-seeded with Luka, we were like the fourth, fifth seed in the West, you know,” Dinwiddie said. “I’m one of them. Let’s not get this twisted. But I also understand being part of a bigger unit.”
Dinwiddie shows extreme confidence here, and if he had come to Dallas, things would have gone a lot differently. Lakers fans have already soured on him and he would have been much better off if he had joined the Mavericks.
His role would have been much bigger, he would have been in a better position to fight for a title and he would have found himself in a situation he already knew. As he stated, he knows he was a great fit with Luka Doncic and that fit could have been used if he had made the simple decision to come to Dallas.
For the Mavs, Dinwiddie would likely be the point guard off the bench, and he could have a chance for a deep playoff run if they continue to play well. The Mavericks have won three games in a row, and with their new and improved defense, anything is possible.
Woike thinks Dinwiddie accepted his small role in Los Angeles, but his comments dissected above might say otherwise.
