There are still a lot of questions about how this will work with both LeBron James And Bronny James on the The Los Angeles Lakers this season.
James Sr., however, was clear about one thing: you can’t call him “Dad” at work.
“We’ve already established that. He can’t call me ‘Dad’ in the workplace,” James said in an upcoming episode of “The Shop,” which he filmed in Paris during the Olympics earlier this month.
“Once we leave the training center and the doors are closed, I can be ‘dad’ again.”
THE The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the NBA Project earlier this summer after a season at USC. He then signed a four-year, $7.9 million guaranteed contract with the team, which is rare for a second-round pick. Bronny spent time with the Lakers’ Summer League team in Las Vegas in July, and he had several games where he scored double digits despite a brutal start at 0 of 15 from behind the arc.
James has long said he wants to play in the league with his son before he retires. Once they take the court together for the first time, they will be the first father-son duo to play as teammates in NBA history and the only fourth father-son duo to achieve this feat in major American professional sports.
It’s unclear what impact Bronny will have on the Lakers this season under first-year head coach JJ Redick, who was hired to replace Darvin Ham. It also remains to be seen how he’ll be able to work alongside his father, who is entering his 22nd season in the league, as a colleague.
As for what they will be called, James assured that it would be easy for him. For his son, however, it is another story.
“It’s easy for me. He’s going to have to adjust,” James said. “But we can’t run down the field and say, ‘Dad, push the ball up. Dad, I’m free! Dad!’ No, he can’t do that.”
