THE Boston Celtics won’t have much spending power this summer to add talent to the roster as they build the next iteration of the team during the 2024 NBA offseason. But they could still add talent via the minimum exception , and Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report could see a meeting sorts of things come to such an end with the veteran striker Gordon Hayward.
“Going from a high-value player to a player on a minimum contract can happen quickly in the NBA, and…Hayward may have reached that point this season,” B/R analyst suggests of what he describes himself as an “optimistic” free agent. target agent for the Celtics.
“He turns 34 this month and he’s only averaging 4.3 points since being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder,” Bailey notes.

“For Boston, he could fill the (veteran wing) role while being younger (than some options) and bringing more experience as a volume scorer,” he suggests.
We think such a meeting would be optimistic, if only because Hayward would likely still find a bigger role with commensurate salary, if only of the mid-level exception type.
That’s out of reach for the Celtics next season, but as they say from time to time in these parts, anything is possible (even if unlikely here).
