Isaiah Thomas is finally getting a boost after a string of disappointing seasons. The veteran point guard hasn’t had a real season since 2017, as he switched franchises after a three-year stint with the Boston Celtics. Now, the two-time NBA All-Star has the opportunity to return to the franchise that started it all, the Sacramento Kings, according to the latest trade rumor.
Last season, the Phoenix Suns signed him to a 10-day contract on March 20 to play out the remainder of their season. Typically, the league allows a franchise to sign a player to two 10-day contracts and after that, they must either sign him or have him become a free agent. Last season, the 35-year-old played in six games, averaging 1.3 points in 3.2 minutes per game, and the Suns once again pushed Thomas into free agency.
Now, the veteran point guard might get another chance, this time in Sac Town. Sean Cunningham of Fox40 It has been reported that Isaiah Thomas, along with a few free agents like Tony Bradley, Juan Toscano-Anderson and Lonnie Walker, will participate in a workout with the Kings roster this week.

Isaiah Thomas has continued to prove himself a long-time fan favorite. Notably, Boston fans treated him to back-to-back All-Star appearances during his prime. He notably averaged 28.9 points in the 2016-17 season, finishing fifth in MVP voting. However, after that season, the 5’9 guard didn’t have a permanent franchise to cling to.
Interestingly, during his six games with the Suns, coach Frank Vogel barely deployed Thomas in the game, as he averaged 3.2 minutes per game. At that point, Valley fans could be heard chanting: “We want it… We want it” as he warmed up on the bench. However, if the Kings’ practice goes well, fans may get to see their favorite point guard in action one more time.

In 2011, the Phoenix Suns used their 60th overall pick and selected Isaiah Thomas. The 5’9” guard stayed with the team for three seasons and finished his tenure with an impressive 20.3 points per game in his third year. The NBA is a big man’s game and it’s pretty tough for small guys to survive unless they have extraordinary shooting skills or playmaking ability. Unfortunately, IT, who has both in his arsenal, blew up after injuring his hip during the 2017 playoffs.
After that, things haven’t been easy for the point guard. Still, the question is whether the Kings will sign him as a backup point guard. Notably, the team recently signed Jordan McLaughlin as a backup point guard, and if the team is looking for another point guard, they might as well focus on size and defense, as well as shooting abilities that Thomas unfortunately can’t offer.
On the other hand, Lonnie Walker, who is also on the list of players to be included in the workouts, can offer the abilities mentioned above. Moreover, the guard is also 25 years old. There is a good chance that Walker will walk away with the offer, unless Thomas has something extraordinary to offer. Do you think IT will make a return to the Kings?
