The Miami Heat’s backcourt is loaded with talent, leaving coach Erik Spoelstra with some serious decisions to make heading into the regular season.

Tyler Herro, Terry Rozier, Duncan Robinson, Josh Richardson and Alec Burks make up the group. Herro hasn’t been a Sixth Man of the Year in two seasons, making the strongest case for Robinson taking the starting job instead.

An NBA scout shared his thoughts on the Heat’s crowded backcourt with Miami Heat’s Anthony Pasciolla On SI.

“I personally think Herro should start,” said one NBA scout who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Herro doesn’t need the ball in his hands, but he does get off script a lot. I like Terry. I think he’s a little bit of everything, and I think they’d be a good fit to start together.”

The only problem with this tandem at the helm is their lack of defensive prowess. Neither is capable of holding their own against elite talent, leaving the other three starters to make up for it. Herro and Rozier limit the Heat’s options up front, as it appears Haywood Highsmith would likely need to start in place of the versatile Nikola Jovic.

“But if you do that, you have to have some presence because your frontcourt is small and neither of them are defensive stars,” the scout noted. “So it puts pressure on Bam. The Heat don’t like to switch sides. That’s what we’re going to do, we’re the Heat! In a lot of cases, that helps.”

Robinson is also a weak defender, but he tends to bite less on potential steals than Herro while showing a bit more tenacity. Herro’s ability to score inside the arc, along with his confidence in his game, could earn him a starting spot.
