Even though Most Improved Player of the Year voters failed to recognize Cam Thomas’ progress during the 2023-24 campaign, that doesn’t mean his development has gone unnoticed. On August 19, SLAM Magazine released an exclusive interview with the Brooklyn Nets guard, delving into his offseason habits, scoring ability and more.

During an extremely busy offseason for Brooklyn, Thomas has remained adaptable.

“I usually try to start fresh because you never know. Things change from year to year, like coaches, schemes, etc.,” he said when asked about his specific summer routine. “This summer was probably the longest I’ve taken, about two or three weeks. Then I got back to work.”

With Mikal Bridges gone, Thomas becomes the Nets’ primary offensive leader. While he has already displayed some of the best offensive skills in the league, he continues to work on his arsenal.

“I just want to keep working on everything. Last summer I tried to put more emphasis on catch-and-shoot shooting, and I think I was right up there with the league in catch-and-shoot percentage. [this past season]”So I’m going to continue to work on that and refine the skills that I had coming into the league, like my dribbling and my finishing around the basket, [while] I continue to improve my catch-and-shoot, trying to have the best percentage in the league.

Thomas gave a glimpse of his personal motivation ahead of the final year of his rookie contract.

“I’m not trying to prove myself anymore. Everybody knows I’m one of the best young scorers – one of the best young guards – in the league now. So I’m just trying to maximize my abilities, see where I can go and become the best player I can be, this year and for years to come.”

The 22-year-old is set to set the league alight in his fourth professional season.
