CAMDEN, NJ – The Philadelphia 76ers have been heavily shorthanded in the previous three games. While Joel Embiid, De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington remained sidelined, the Sixers also missed Tyrese Maxey due to a concussion.
Maxey suffered a concussion during the March 3 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He was then sent home before a March 5 loss to the Brooklyn Nets and missed losses to the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans.
As the Sixers now prepare to face the New York Knicks on Sunday, one has to wonder about Maxey’s progression toward a return.
“He’s still in protocol,” coach Nick Nurse said Saturday at practice. “I mean, obviously you see it there. He goes through the stages. I think there are about five stages. He seems to be doing well.
Maxey needs to follow these steps to get him back on the field. A concussion is obviously a very serious injury and the Sixers don’t want to rush anything into this situation. Philadelphia wants to wait and see how it can recover from everything.
“It’s wait and see,” the nurse finished. “I think again, like he’s doing the steps. I think it should be good. Like I said, he looks good to me and he’s…according to reports from (vice president of athlete care) Simon (Rice), everything is good.
The Sixers will begin a 3-game road trip against the Knicks on Sunday.
