After a second consecutive MVP-caliber season, the Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received recognition in ESPN’s annual offseason survey.
Released Monday, a number of NBA coaches, scouts and executives voted on a variety of topics, including the best current players and the best upcoming players in the NBA.
In the category “Who will be the best NBA player in five years?”, Gilgeous-Alexander came in second on the list with two votes. Victor Wembanyama was the big favorite in this answer with 12 votes, while Luka Doncic SGA tied two votes and Nikola Jokic And Anthony Edwards completing the group with one voice each.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s recognition comes after the six-year veteran averaged more than 30 points per game and finished in the top five in MVP voting for the second straight season. The Toronto product averaged 30.1 points, a career-high 6.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and two steals per game while shooting 53.5 percent.
With impressive ball-handling skills, an ability to play at a high pace, a keen eye for passing and a remarkable mid-range shot, Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as one of the best offensive players in the NBA.
In addition to his offensive skills, Gilgeous-Alexander also emerged as a solid defender last season and was one of the NBA leaders in steals.
Despite his well-rounded game, Gilgeous-Alexander still has room for improvement. If the 26-year-old can improve his three-point shooting, Gilgeous-Alexander’s offensive prowess will reach another milestone and almost certainly guarantee the Oklahoma City star an MVP award.
In the section “Who will be the 2024-25 NBA MVP?” categoryGilgeous-Alexander received seven votes, two more than any other player on the list.
The Thunder were also recognized as a team, garnering 12 more votes than any other Western team to win the conference. OKC also finished second in the poll’s NBA title picks, ranking just one vote behind the Boston Celtics.
