I’ve noticed that you and Grant share a keen interest in using your platforms to make the world better than when you found it. In fact, that’s a big impetus for this interview. You are organizing an event today, for your “Boss Up Gala”. Tell us what it is.
It happened last year, I wanted to do something with my platform, like you said. Obviously, being an NBA player is a dream come true. But then you start to look around (and ask yourself), “How can I help the community I come from, the community I currently live in, to make a difference?”
For me, it was obvious. My mother is a female business owner. She owns a flower shop in her home and seeing the things she’s experienced, but also the impact she’s had on the community back home (moved me). Plus, my dad did a lot of things and in the community too, always seeing them give back.
So wherever I can, I want to be able to give back to business owners and give them a fair platform. My mother went through so many challenges starting her business on her own, without having the resources she should have had. I’ve seen her achieve this and I want to be able to help anyone in her position, as well as other positions as well.
#PatrickWilliams recently hosted its first “Shark Tank” style event for two #Chicago entrepreneurs needing help with their business. The two women presented themselves to Patrick and a jury for a chance to receive a grant. The winner will be announced at Patrick’s gala on February 29. pic.twitter.com/qAMld95R5J
